Facilitators

“I’m praying not only for them
but also for those who will believe in Me
because of them and their witness about Me.
The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind—Just as You, Father, are in Me and I in you, so they might be of one heart and mind with Us.
Then the world might believe that You, in fact, sent Me.” —John 17:20-23 The Message (MSG)

Thank you for your willingness to serve as a facilitator at the upcoming One project gathering in San Diego, California. You are instrumental in helping to bring about lively discussion and build Jesus-centered community.

Many of you have served as facilitators in the past, and still more of you have extensive experience leading small groups. Others, however, have limited experience and are slightly anxious at the prospect of taking on such a daunting task! The following information should put your mind at rest, helping you to better understand the goals the One project has for its Recalibrate sessions and your role in helping to achieve these goals.

The purpose of recalibration
We hope that Recalibration discussion groups will provide a catalyst for Jesus-centered people to re-vision ministry, life, church, and relationships. Recalibration tables should provide a safe place where participants feel protected, valued, and respected, so they can share ideas without fear of censure, and experience life with a spirit of gracious inclusion, innovative love, and defiant optimism—helping to create a strong, unified body of Jesus.

Facilitator job description
As a facilitator, we ask that you choose a table and remain at that table for both days, attending all sessions. While you will mostly participate in the gathering just like anyone else, your special responsibility is to help make sure conversations during the Recalibrate sessions are focused, engaging, and allow all participants the chance to hear and be heard. A good facilitator:

  • Establishes a safe place for each participant.
  • Models openness, acceptance, and inclusiveness.
  • Nurtures relationships among participants.
  • Transitions participants into Recalibrate sessions.
  • Keeps the conversation on topic, avoiding tangents.
  • Prevents individuals from dominating the discussions.
  • Helps everyone get a chance to participate.
  • Encourages participants to use social media to interact with the ideas presented.
  • Urges participants to stay in touch after the gathering.

Useful tips

  • Start discussions with prayer.
  • Begin with introductions and an icebreaker of your choice.
  • Listen to each table member and provide validation whether you agree or disagree.
  • Do not allow anyone to dominate the discussion—yourself included!
  • Re-direct conversation back to the topic at hand if necessary.
  • Create a “safe” environment for people to share thoughts and questions without judgment.
  • Help the conversations to flow within the allotted time.
  • Make sure everyone gets the opportunity to contribute to the discussion.
  • Focus on constructive topics.
  • Encourage participants to keep in touch after the gathering.
  • If possible, eat meals together!
  • Collect contact details at the end of the gathering so you can stay in touch with those who were at your table.
  • People sometimes move tables—be prepared to welcome new people at any point throughout the day and integrate them with the rest of the group.

Facilitators meeting: Sabbath, February 25 (7:30 a.m.)
We will meet for thirty minutes as a group before the first session begins to give you the chance to ask questions, share tips for building community through conversation, and pray together for the speakers and participants. This meeting will take place in the main hall. After we've met, we will help you select your tables and prepare to meet your group.

If you have questions, please contact the One project discussion coordinator, Becky De Oliveira. Looking forward to seeing all of you in San Diego!
